This introduction establishes the contemporary relevance of studying the Maqāṣid al-Sharīʿah (Objectives of Islamic Law), particularly amid modern calls for the implementation of Shariah. While noting the scarcity of Urdu literature on the topic, it outlines the aim to highlight the subject’s importance and explore the reasons for its renewed interest. The discussion traces the historical context, acknowledging that although the formal term emerged later, the underlying concept of maṣlaḥah (public interest) has been present since early Islamic thought, with Imam al-Shāṭibī providing its first comprehensive analysis. The text critically examines the traditional list of Maqāṣid—preservation of religion, life, intellect, lineage, and property—and argues for its necessary expansion to address modern challenges in economics, politics, and international relations. Proposed additions include human dignity, individual rights, freedom, peace, social order, poverty alleviation, equitable wealth distribution, and peaceful global coexistence. Ultimately, the introduction emphasizes that a refined and broader understanding of the Maqāṣid will guide Islamic movements in setting priorities and aid Muslim individuals, groups, and governments in reforming their conduct and policies, as these objectives form the foundational pillars of Islamic law that ensure human welfare, justice, security, and balance.
